Thursday was an early start for us as we embark on our journey across the great state of Kansas. Great might be a bias comment as others our thinking really! Theresa and I were proud that we managed to get on the road by 8:45 am, new record for us. We needed an early start to stay a head of the winds that were expected. Our goal was to get to Goodland, Kansas by 1 pm.
The journey was pretty uneventful. However, we were only getting 6 miles to the gallon due to the winds. We needed to stop and refuel twice to make it there. Theresa needed to find stops that would work for the RV and she rocked it as usual.
Second stop was a challenge as we picked a Love’s with a tight setup for RVs. First, we had our first encounter with running over the curb which was a test of our nerves. We thought that we handled it well until we are leaving. Laying by the curb was a support base, so Theresa jumped out of the truck to retrieve. We caused a traffic jam. It was a bit like frogger for Theresa. She was on a mission to retrieve it. Note to self, we need to get better at capturing photos of our fun! It was funny because we didn’t lose a support base. Theresa risked her life for no apparent reason! Now we have an extra support base.
The rest of the journey was not fun. Driving a 34-foot long and 14-foot high RV with winds sustaining at 18 miles an hour tested our nerves. The gusts reached up to 28 miles per hour. We made it safely to the KOA in Goodland. The set-up was a breeze. We are getting very skilled at it. Of course we still follow the checklist as we don’t want to miss any critical steps. Or we are just checklist freaks! The winds really picked up after we were settled and rocked the RV pretty good. Glad we were not on the road with those winds. We were exhausted after the drive and took an afternoon nap before exploring Goodland.
The world largest easel with a giant Van Gogh print was one of the attractions. It was on top of Theresa’s list to see. We captured some photos and toured the town. Goodland is a typical small town in Kansas. There is not much to do there besides enjoying the old downtown and homes. We captured some photos for your enjoyment including a pretty sunset.
We called it an early night. We want to head out early to get to Colorado. We aim to celebrate the 4th of July there!
